The outer (external) ear: composed of, the auricle (pinna) helps direct sounds, external acoustic meatus contains hairs, sebaceous glands, and ceruminous glands, tympanic membrane forms the boundary between the external and middle ear. The outside of the external acoustic meatus is cartilage covered with skin, but the deeper portion is consisted of the temporal bone, which continues into the tympanic membrane. The acoustic meatus skin surface has lots of glands that create the earwax to repel insects and hair that prevents dirt from going in. The tympanic membrane is the border between the outer and middle ear. It is cone-shaped, pointing towards the inside middle ear.
