Other specialized roles (can be highly specialized) Nectary they make the nectar in flowers: guard cells: gas exchange. Red: special substance that epidermal cells secrete wax. Formed by the epidermal cells (they produce them) together with the substance they secrete. Outermost part is wax formed by the epidermal cells. = protects because it reflexes and refracts light. Example of wax on plants: wax on chamomile petal we see the flower as white because of the way the wax refracts it. Trichomes are a special type of epidermal cell. Can consist of a single cell or multiple cells.
