Cell wall made of chitin: polysaccharide, shell or arthropods. External digestion of food: absorb what they"ve already digested. Basic unit is hypha that has spore-producing structures. Septate: separated by septum, with pores for nuclei to flow between. Predator: makes a snare to enable it to digest the worm externally, then absorb it: worms, plants: sometimes helps plants or harms them. Asex: spores -> germination -> mycelium -> spore-producing structures -> repeat. Sex: mycelium -> plasmogamy (fusion of cytoplasm) -> Heterokaryotic stage -> karyogamy (fusion of nuclei) -> zygote -> meiosis -> spores -> germination -> repeat. *zygotic meiosis: zygote undergoes meiosis, and makes spores. Spores in sporangia: black bread mold. Conidia (spores walled off hyphae, contains haploid nucleus that can go off and make a new fungus) in conidioppores: penicillium. Fungi are closely related to animals: common ancestor 1 bya. Zygomycetes phylum zygomycota: 1000 species, coenocytic (nonseptate) hyphae, decomposers, parasites, commensals, black bread mold.
