Document Summary

Lecture 9 - angiosperms (end) & diversity of flowering. Angiosperms are split into two categories, as a monocot or dicot: 1998, angiosperm were split again into four groups. Basal angiosperms - about 0. 5% of angiosperm species: ex. Magnoliids - about 2. 5% angiosperm species: ex. laurel family, magnolia family, black pepper. Monocots - about 28% of angiosperm species: ex. grasses, palms, lilies, irises. Eudicots - about 66% of angiosperm species: ex. roses, grapes, oaks, apples, and peas. Eudicot: floral parts in 2, 4, 5, or multiples of these numbers, step - vascular bundles in a ring, netted venation, can form woody tissues, three-pores in the pollen, root develop from a radicle. Monocot: floral parts in 3 or multiples, stem - scattered vascular bundle, parallel venation, woody tissues rare, single-pored pollen, roots are adventitious. Pollen grain germination openings are a trait used in tracing evolution - the more openings, the more areas the pollen can germinate and grow through the openings.
