BIOL 2060 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Ecotype, Ecological Study, Parnassius Smintheus
Population Distribution and Abundance
January 18th, 2016
Niche Concept
• See niche distribution
• Fundamental Niche – the potential range an organism could live in determined by
physical and chemical factors
• Realized Niche – the observed range determined also by species interactions
• Ex. Feeding Niches of Galapagos Finches – different beak size = different niche
• Ex. Foraging areas of MacArthur’s Warblers
Zonation on the rocky shore:
• Upper limits are controlled by physical factors tolerance
• Lower limits controlled by biological factors competition, consumption
*Chapter 10
What is a population?
• A population is a group of individuals of the same species occupying a particular space at
a particular time
o Common gene pool
o Common adaptations
o Boundaries in space and time can be vague
• Variation within population variation among populations variations among species
• Populations are important units for:
o Ecological study
o Conservation
o Management
Distribution: The importance of scale
• Global
o Temperature
o Land/ ocean
• Continental
o Climate
o Ecotype
• Regional
o Regional gradients
o Habitat
• Local
o Small scale gradients (moisture/ salinity)
o Species interactions
Ex. Kangroos (Continental)
• Grey – seasonal variation in precipitation (dominates in summer)
