Furies sometimes called the august ones, the kindly ones. Ghost of clytemnestra : wakes up furies. Furies/chorus : hyperactive chorus, wingless in aeschylus, moaning about place in world, become crimson-clad protectors of the city. Athenian citizens : members of jury, women of athens. Tension between old and new: furies deeply resent younger olympians, almost pathological anger at youth, feel like new gods cheated them. Legal reforms in athens: areopagus- rock of ares. Monday, january 25, 2016: areopagus trials reformed by ephialtes. Lost sweeping authority but could still try murder cases and religious matters: odd argument points. What sort of link constitutes shared blood. New settlement with the furies: athena"s creative diplomacy. Offers of: protectorship of the city, receive sacri ce and honours, victory for both, power of persuasion, joint with athena. Furies received new settlement instead of feelings of failure. Argos is the sworn ally of athens.
