The assault: one of the things this novel is concerned with is how is time measured, what is the relationship of time to memory, divided in terms of before the war and after the war; nothing was said about the actual war, makes a kid realize that there"s something dangerous here, shameful brought up the war and asked him where his dad had to hide his dad started to cry (2nd war, relationship of his personal stories to the novel, all of us are 3 degrees away from someone who"s had trauma; trauma in the 20th century becomes a really important topic in literature, so much of our writing is about the horrific things that can happen to people, writers think that if they have a spectacular story, it will write itself, but it"s a representation of trauma, and the writer is profiting from representing trauma.
