GEOG 2000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Ozone Layer, 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference, Fluorine
Document Summary
Chapter 21 climate change and ozone loss. Troposphere- the lowest region of the atmosphere, extending from the earth"s surface to a height of about 3. 7 6. 2 miles (6 10 km), which is the lower boundary of the stratosphere. Greenhouse effect- in addition to incoming sunlight, a natural process called the greenhouse effect, warms the earth"s lower troposphere and surface. Some of the energy from the sun warms the earth"s surface, causing it to radiate infrared energy back towards space. Greenhouse gases- clouds, water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other gases in the lower troposphere are heated when they absorb some of this outgoing infrared energy. These clouds and gases then radiate heat as longer- wavelength infrared radiation in all directions. Some of the released energy is radiated into space and some warms the troposphere and the earth"s surface. *is the troposphere warming question on final exam*
