The objective was to have an endless supply of labour on the sugar plantations and to make it legally impossible for those workers to make any demands upon the employer. Indentured indians left from calcutta in the north, and madras in the south. Idea was quick movement of vulnerable workforce within empire. Attempts to maintain caste and general village structure.
