Crossing the kala pani: indians in the making of the modern world. indenture - a contract that an indian signed before leaving india, which bound them to an estate for 3 - 5 years, but effectively bound them to the colony for 10 years. Could not choose where they lived, what they ate etc. indentureship was economic servitude following the formal end of slavery in the british empire. Idea that you could put newly liberated slaves into this system, as middle ground. The objective was to have an endless supply of labour on the sugar plantations and to make it legally impossible for those workers to make any demands upon the employer. Indentured indians left from calcutta in the north, and madras in the south. Idea was quick movement of vulnerable workforce within empire. Attempts to maintain caste and general village structure.
