Population health assessment begins with secondary data. Including windshield survey, focus groups, key informant interviews, and surveys if appropriate and timely. Questions for primary data collection are informed by secondary data and frameworks (place, people function; determinants of health; population health models; 5 principles of primary health care, etc. ) Data analysis follows a systematic process to identify priorities. Stage 1 current picture: story, new perspectives, leverage. Stage 2 preferred picture: possibilities, change agenda, commitment. Stage 3 the way forward: possible strategies, best fit strategies-plan. Need to find out what is going on along with understanding the context including the factors hindering or helping resolution of the immediate problem(s) or concern. R try to be relaxed or natural in your behaviour. Leverage is best when we deal with a problem that has short term gains, and the gains of dealing with the problem outweigh the losses.
