Love creates new value, independent of individual or objective appraisal. The object of love becomes part of the lover"s affective (emotional) life, something s/he cares about. Caring about the house, the man may find new and more satisfying ways of living in it. At the same time, the object achieves a kind of autonomy. The house assumed a presence and attains a dignity. It makes demands and may even seem to have a personality, to have needs of its own (269) [with love] it makes no sense to speak of verifiability; and though bestowing may often be injurious, unwise, even immoral, it cannot be erroneous in the way that an appraisal might be. (268-9) Appraisal: communities of people have individual value for one another as they meet each others interests - we are always appraising each other. Note: singer"s use of pronouns - "he", beloved is "she", but this is merely conventional.
