PHYL 2041 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Cochlear Nerve, Middle Ear, Oval Window
Document Summary
Phyl 2041 lecture 19 november 20, 2018 outer, middle, inner ears, cochlear function, auditory. The cartilage part of the outer ear is the pinna. The sound would enter through the hole of the ear called the auditory canal. The sound would proceed through the canal until it hits the ear drum (or the tympanic membrane). Beyond the ear drum, there is another chamber that is air-filled referred to as the middle ear. Between the tympanic membrane and the inner ear, there are 3 small bones, referred to as the malleus, incus, and stapes. Inside the third chamber, the inner ear, there is a series of snail-shaped structure called the cochlea, and it is the organ that converts physical movements into electrical signals. The middle ear is air-filled and it is connected by a tube, called the eustacian tube to the back of the throat. The pressure waves go in through the outer ear, which move the tympanic membrane.
