Consists of bundles of neurons called nerves. Sensory: info from sensory receptors to brain. Motor: info from brain to rest of body: autonomic nervous system (2 divisions) Controls glands & smooth muscles in body organs. Mostly involuntary functions i. e. not under our control! After a strong emotional shock, the parasympathetic system may over react when trying to return to homeostasis. Examples: lower blood pressure (faint, stimulate too much digestion (indigestion/ulcer, relaxes urethral sphincter muscle (involuntary urination) There are case studies of people who actually die of voodoo magic. The shaman places a voodoo doll on the doorstep of the target. The target naturally is afraid, because everyone in the area knows the power of voodoo. The target walks around in a daze for days. Neurons: conducting cells of nervous system, highly variable in size, shape and function, roughly 100 billion neurons . Could fit 5-50 in a 12pt font period. All of them side by side = 1000km!
