Songbirds used to be thought as monogamous but they"re not. Indigo buntings: he observed their mating behaviours: 13% of matings were not with mates when observed, 42% were not with mates using genetics, they have social pair and other matings. Why different mating systems: different selection pressures on different species, mating systems have different implications for mating success for males vs females, energy and time for reproduction is risky because of predators. Breeding may reduce reproductive success of individual if it is unsuccessful. Take a lot of time and energy to develop. Good they have lots of aunts and sisters to take care of them. Offspring: precocial: pretty mature at birth, can stand and move, bonding window (how quickly mom bonds to baby) closes within a few hours/ days, eg. Elephant and deer: altricial: helpless and immobile. Long period before they can take care of themselves, blind: bonding window is large and can last for many weeks after birth, eg.
