Abnormal psychology is the field devoted to the scientific stuffy of abnormal behavior to describe, predict, explain, and change abnormal patterns of functioning. Violation of norms. (a behavior that either threatens or makes anxious to those who observe) Personal distress. (personal suffering, distress or torment) Behavior can only be abnormal relative to cultural norms. Cultural norms can also shift over time (homosexuality was removed from dsm in the 70"s). Ultimately, each society selects general criteria for defining abnormality and then uses those criteria to judge particular cases. Affect = range, intensity, and changeability of emotions and emotional responsiveness. Behaviors = ability to control impulses and interaction with others. Cognition = perceptions and interpretation of events, other people and self. *people with personality disorders are not able to control the abc"s. The various disorders overlap each other so much that is difficult to distinguish from one to another.
