PSYO 3092 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Essentialism, Order Type, Object Permanence
Document Summary
Infants are more sophisticated in the knowledge of the world compared to what it was thought they knew, especially based around piaget"s stage theory. Since ancient times, philosophers have been wondering how people acquire knowledge. Early rationalists believed that at least some knowledge is provided a priori or without having to be taught. Development takes places through processes of maturity and is not entirely dependent upon perceived observations. New approaches acknowledge that the organization of neurons is a result of developmental processes, a result of species-typical development, and the benefit of the resources of a species-typical environment. Intuitive physics: knowledge relevant to physics and objects that develops early in human infants. Infants have been shown to show basic knowledge in intuitive physics. Object permanence, infants less than 8 months, do not understand that objects still exist when they"re out of sight.
