Sosa 2503 lecture 22 march 28, 2019 diagnosis: the social dimensions of medical assessments: the talk is focus on psychiatry and dsm, when are talking about mental health, we are referring explicitly or inexplicitly on dsm. There are 3 social dimensions of diagnosis: diagnosis bias how diagnostic categories produce biased outcomes, diagnostic consequences how diagnoses sort people, diagnoses in actin. More mans are diagnosed: before the changes: white women were the most likely group to receive a diagnosis of schizophrenia, after the change: black men were most commonly diagnosed with schizophrenia. They were diagnosed people who were participating the civil rights movement as schizophrenic: these are modest diagnostic changes that have substantial impact on diagnostic biases. Diagnostic bias summary: different groups can have the same experiences but re ceve different diagnpsis, how therapist think about a category can change who gets the diagnosis.
