Theatre performance be a one off, or can be memorized and repeated many times. Repeated symbolic actions that are felt by a community to be necessary. Rituales are believed to have magical effects if they are done correctly. Ritual theatre became very important to some ancient civilization. Can draw attention to the theatrical elements of society in a way that could undermine authority and stability. The invention of writing changed the way theatre was thought about. Helps plays to be staged beyond the theatre community that created them. It helps it prevents it from being changed. Prehaps because it is ritualistic and must not be changed. Or because it could be considered artistically perfect.
