Wednesday October 3, 2012 Plant Biology Day 10 Secondary Growth – Dicots - Phloem added to the outside, xylem  inside - Can distinguish individual vascular bundles - More secondary growth – no separation of vascular cambium around the circumference of the stem - Growth rings – secondary xylem o Cause of the rings  change in growth rate at the xylem tissue o May be a change in type of cells produced in the xylem o Vessels (spring), tracheids – later summer Vascular Rays - Parenchyma tissue that functions in the lateral conduction of H O +2sugar Ray Orientation - Can use this to refer to how wood is cut  will depend on the part of the vascular rays that are seen o Tops of rays  transverse cut o Sides of Rays  radial cut o End of Rays  perpendicular cut o To a radius  (tangential cut) Tyloses - Parenchyma cells that are adjacent to dead vessel and tracheid tissue - Block entry
