Critical thinking with psychological science- sept 16/15 chapter 1. Psychology- the scientific study of human behavior and mental process. A systematic way of gathering knowledge about the natural world. A set of attitudes and skills designed to prevent us from fooling ourselves. Science is not a brutal competition of opinion . It"s a matter of finding out which explanations best fit the data. Hindsight bias- the tendency to believe after learning an outcome, that one would have foreseen it the i knew it all along effect. Why is psychology challenging & interesting?: human behavior is difficult to predict because most actions are multiply determined (produced by many factors, psychological influences don"t act in isolation. Difficult to decide which cause or causes are operating: people also differ from each other in terms of thinking, emotion, personality, and behavior. Such individual differences can explain why we can respond to the same situation differently.
