What Is Patriarchy Paternalism • Notion that women have to be protected by men, because they are incapable of protecting themselves • Generates independence for males, and dependence for females • Gender differences (roles) promoted through socialization (e.g., religion, the media, education, the family) Chivalry • Old fashioned notion that men should do things for women • Chivalry emphasizes the helplessness of females and their dependence upon males to do things for them Sexism
