ENGL 1127 Lecture : Summary Writing Process.docx
Document Summary
Summary writing process: make sure you fully understand the piece. Where active readers come in handy: note for gist. Avoid full sentences: take notes in sentence fragments (do not write exact quote) Avoid trivial details: stick to the big ideas. Keep interpretations/criticism separate: make an outline. Have everything on one page: to look at everything all at once, determine how long your summary should be. Compare how long the original"s summary is: write the summary (without looking at the original piece) Attribute statements to the author(s: *start : authors name, the title and controlling idea (suggestion) Change order of ideas: double-check with original. Too similar: make sure your piece is in your own words. Too different: make sure your summary is accurate and on topic. Mentioning the context: the title, the date, the author. Avoid direct quotations: summary is usually based on your own words. One word summary of an image: brevity, clarity, accuracy, objectivity.
