The economy of a nation was reconstructed to a war economy. Goods were shifted from consumer goods to war goods. The power was centralized - the government would try to pass decrees in order to control the economy and gear them for war. The use of propaganda to encourage men to volunteer in the war. Conscription was used to raise and mobilize a massive army. 2 million men were put on uniform (early august). The first world war was very exciting for men who volunteered to protect their nation. War of trenches, mud, etc for years. => death tolls: russia => 8 million men. The schlieffen plan established the mobilization list.
