POLI 1119 Lecture : Identities Geography and Borders.docx
Document Summary
Help crystalize identity around local-state, nation and community: ex. grow up with state, feel affiliation w/ state, mostly identified with state province locality. Borders: shape internal lines of communication, ties social networks w/ physical features, clearly divide us and them , allows communication networks to flourish. Electricity lines, canal, etc crystalizes w/in borders. Pathways in which common identity markers and common political identities flow. Identities don"t flow outward from centre; they follow paths of hierarchical metropolises and hinterlands: older parts became centres (metropolises) toronto, calgary, vancouver, Halifax; newer parts became hinterlands (frontier) nfl, the north, rural parts: hierarchical: ontario/quebec have greater power compared to maritimes, not a bubble; but rather a spiderweb. Mann (1995) argues that these involve almost all aspects of human interaction. All human interaction requires communication : does not have to be verbal/written, more of way we dress/etiquette/cultural norms. National identities continually reinforced by daily noise of life.
