Day 5 - Natural Selection
-Species diversity = species richness
-Charles Darwin, and Russell Wallace both came up with the conclusion of the theory
of natural selection
Charles Darwin
-father was a physician, so he decided to go to med school to pursue a career in
medicine, but failed out multiple times
-after this his family decided to send him on a trip on a boat to travel around the world
-on his trip he was able to observe and study the mass diversity of species all over the
world
-allowing him to come up with the conclusion of natural selection when he returned
back home
Russell Wallace
-his family was not very wealthy, so he thought that he could make a lot of money by
collection exotic animals and stuff them in order to sell them to wealthy families
-he decided to go to Indonesia to collect these exotic species and shipped them back
to England on a boat, in order to sell them
-the boat ended sinking and he decided to go to other regions of the world to find
more rare species
-through this he was able to see the diversity of life in species, and came to the
conclusion that natural selection lead to new species
-he then published a paper stating that this is how the world was created over a long
period of time
Natural Selection
-individual variation in all species, that make us all different
-this creates natural selection, and the movement of species through generations
-this occurs every generation, that depends on different factors like differential
survival, and differential reproduction (which is the most important)
THE MAN WITH THE MOST CHILDREN WAS IN SULTONG, MOROCCO, AND HAD
886 KIDS.
THE WOMAN WITH THE MOST CHILDREN WAS RUSSION AND HAVE 69 KIDS.
-males have a higher reproductive potential then women do as they can fertilize many
eggs in a day, and women have only 1 egg fertilized every 9 months
Clinal Species
-organisms that are in the process of growing into a large mass of them
-ex. leopard frog
