N. b. the sense of taste comes from 80% of the sense of smell; thus with any nasal congestion, very little is tasted. Especially on the tongue (in the papillae) Gives a rough texture to the tongue (abrasive feel) kinds: Liform: thread-like, abundant (anterior two third), no taste buds. Fungiform: mushroom shaped, abundant (anterior top and sides), taste buds on the top. Circumvallate: round, not abundant (10-12 placed like an inverted v at the back), taste buds on its sides. Foliate: ridge like, taste buds on side wall, rudimentary in human (lots in other mammals) Taste buds are made of 3 types of epithelial cells: Supporting cells: isolates the taste cells so that it can do its work.
