PHIL-1115EL Lecture 12: Philosophy notes second semester
Document Summary
We knew that the world had a specific order and had to comply to that order. In this sense, it was a familiar world, it was possible to orient yourself in the world, to navigate its difficulties and its many paths. Things happen in the world, and those things have a cause that can be know, identified, and ultimately appeased or controlled through various magical means . Pascal begins with a two-by-two matrix: either god exists or does not, and either you believe or do not: you believe in god= infinite reward, do not believe in god= punishment. If god exists then theists will enjoy eternal bliss, while atheists will suffer eternal damnation. If god does not exist then theists will enjoy infinite happiness before they die, and atheists with enjoy infinite happiness too, though not so much because they will experience angst rather than the comforts of religion.
