A theory is a tentative explanation that helps us understand why, and what we are researching. A good theory is: time consuming, clearly stated, brings known facts together and organises them, relates previously unrelated information, gives us the chance to make predictions. The role of a theory helps us to guide and focus our research while mapping the relationship to the study in question. It allows numeric measure of otherwise unmeasurable data i. e. the quality of a relationship. A controlled study with manipulated dependant variables. How the dependant variable is affected by the independent variable. In an experimental study: no variable manipulation, random assignment is used. In an nonexperimental study: manipulate the independent variable, no random assignment, hold other variables constant, cause effect results. Study of the joint relationship that might exist. Changes in one variable creates a change in the other variable: +/- 1. 00 strong correlation. Developemtal approaches: comparisons at different ages: cross-sectional: present.
