Briefly describe umoja (e. g. , when did it start and why) (~4:40-8:30). When it started: 1991, home to 50+ women and 130 children. Why it was started: women who had been raped by british soldiers were banished by their husbands. Life is better for many abused children and wives, education available for the children: how did rape play into the founding of umoja? (8:50) The men: men consider their wives property of them, and if he cant have her he is tempted to attack umoja, rape her and kill her. Yet they see the biggest threat to the women as outside attackers, such as drunks. Believe the women would be defenceless in the face of attack and thus have a duty to protect them.
