Since 711, spain had been under muslim control. The christian reconquest of spain culminated when the last muslim kingdom fell in 1492. In 1469, isabella of castile married ferdinand of aragon who sponsored christopher columbus" voyage: they reformed their royal council instead of having the most powerful nobleman with a seat at the council, they wanted good lawyers for legislation. Local corrupt municipal officials replaced with loyal representatives of the crown which extended monarchical control over towns/cities: the army was reformed and became more professional and relied on a strong infantry and mercenaries. In the 16th century, the spanish army was considered the best/professional army in all of europe. Control of the church, good army, revenue, administration for spain to emerge as a great power in europe. Holy roman empire: napoleon said, "neither holy, nor roman, nor empire". It was very decentralized with german princes, etc, jealous of their independence: system of election and going through a number of dynasty.
