Iron century: wars between great powers leading to population loss, economic devastation, etc, the background of this is "the little ice age". Cooling trends brought on famines: reappearance of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. Decrease in agricultural production which leads to malnutrition, a loss of immunity and terrible diseases (smallpox) epidemics. The mediterranean area suffered the most when it came to plague and it"s one of the reasons the renaissance states went into decline. 50% of children died before 7 years, etc and the height of the average person lost two inches due to malnutrition. Increased class tensions of starving peasants and well fed, rich noblemen: french wars of religion of 1559-98: slaughter of protestants on saint bartholomew"s. Day: 3 contestants for the throne until henry converted to catholicism for the good of the country and politics but also gave the edict of nantes. Religious tolerance but catholics weren"t fond of it.
