China in the early 20th century: early 20th century east asia, anti-manchu movements and ideas, aftermath of boxer rebellion in china, limited reforms after 1900. New leaders emerge as a republic is created to policies and structure of society: empress dowager and emperor dies in 1908. Fall of the qing dynasty: revolution in 1911. Peasants rise up to fight in terms of personal conflicts, agrarian problems. Provinces declare their independence, rising to rebellion one by one: political vacuum after abdication (1912), regional warlords: take over in the different provinces who exert their influence, moderate politics, the economy, and relationships with westerners. Investment in education, promotion of universities: continued foreign influence and interventions. By japan and western powers who come together and decide they don"t want to support a divided china. Elected president in 1911: seen as the most popular leader. Spent youth in hawaii, learns english, adopts christianity and becomes a doctor in 1892.
