Just when he thought he was at the top, he fell. Fulbert was a cleric living near notre dame. Fulbert got thugs to beat and castrate abelard as revenge. Even in separation they wrote each other letters. His letters back to heloise were seldom as loving as hers to him. He was now a monk and wanted to keep using reason to solve problems posed by faith. His best example is his book of contradictions. He pointed out passages where christian authors contradicted one another. Most authors would try to reconcile the conflicting authorities via reason. He asked his students to figure them out instead: dialectical method. Cathedral schools and later universities held frequent disputationes: peter lombard. For the next few centuries, his book, sentences, became the standard theological textbook. High medieval thinkers had to comment on it. Abelard"s ideas enjoyed a good afterlife: bernard vs abelard. After castration and forced ascesis, abelard had to deal with his arch enemy.
