Document Summary

He was a beauracrat as well as an ambassador. He worked for the government of (1500-1512) republican florence: the pope of 1498 was alexander the 6th. Machiavelli speaks of them as important political actors. In 1512, thanks to the afterlife of the borgia policies and policies of northern italian city states, florence has a revolution. Before they were oligarchs and used money and resources to cause the republic to act in certain ways. This oligarchic family is back to control the city. The city is no longer seen as quite democratic: machiavelli is imprisoned, tortured, exiled, and has to flee the medici. Most of his works were published after his death because they would probably want to kill him more if he did in life: juan luis vives (1493-1540). He leaves at the age of 16 and is already well educated in humanism. He came from a jewish family and after 1492 was forced to convert to christianity.
