PSYC-105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Mania, Bipolar Disorder, Pressure Of Speech
Document Summary
People with mania tend to sleep for only 2-3 hours a night and feel totally rested and can outrace you, buzzing with energy. This energy fuels their irritability and mood: engage in risky activities like gambling with life savings, cheat on partners, do drugs they wouldn"t normally do, hypomania lasts about 4-7 days. If you have one manic episode, 90% chance to have another one. Bipolar i disorder: has experienced a manic episode. Bipolar influences: heritability may be 85%, serotonin and dopamine likely involved. Increased activity in the amygdala and decreased activity in the prefrontal cortex. This is the area of your brain that detects threats which is likely why they"re irritable. Prefrontal cortex tells you to stop and control your behaviour but is not working like it should: antidepressant induced mania. You can push someone into a manic phase using antidepressants with a full blown manic episode and starting down the bipolar disorder.
