Document Summary

Personality consists of traits relatively enduring predispositions that influence our behaviour across many situations. Nomothetic approach focuses on identifying general laws that govern the behaviour of all individuals (most modern research) Idiographic approach focuses on identifying the unique characteristics and life history experiences within a person (most case studies) Causes of personality differences: twin and adoption studies. Genetic factors: nucleotide sequence (dna strand which codes for certain personality traits) Shared environmental factors: experiences within a family which make individuals more a like. Nonshared environmental factors: experiences within a family which makes individuals less a like. Example: different parenting styles for different children, extracurricular activities, friends. Later-borns are 3 times more likely than firstborns to favor revolutionary scientific ideas still controversial. Genetic factors have a heavy influence on personality, but not complete control. Identical twins reared apart are as similar as identical twins reared together (vs. fraternal) Shared environment plays little to no role in adult personality.
