PSYC-281 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Stimulus Control, Junk Food, Self-Control
Document Summary
Basic idea: want to do one thing, but end up doing something else; disparity between what you want to do and what you actually do. Want to eat healthy, but end up eating junk food. Some people are good at control themselves, others are not. Reference to willpower: described as persistence, motivation, prioritize. People who are good at controlling their behaviour are said to have a lot of willpower. Can say things to themselves, seem to have made up their mind, but don"t follow through. Give kids one marshmallow, tell them if they don"t eat it, they can have another, but if they eat that one marshmallow, they can"t have another. Most kids can"t wait and eat the one. Other kids distracted themselves while waiting to resist the temptation. Say someone has a lot of willpower when someone is able to do something difficult.
