Residential schools and the truth and reconciliation act. Passing of laws that legally allowed children to be rounded up and taken from their family;goal was full assimilation and ending the indian problem (christianize and civilize them). Not allowed to remove the child from school, could face jailtime. Most schools run by catholic churches eventually become government run. Sexual abuse was rampant, physical abuse common, learned behaviours are brought into adulthood and inflicted by that parent onto their own child. Purpose and role of the tnc for truth and reconciliation: the former students had to take action and voice their experiences. Survivors initiated a class action lawsuit against the government and seeked redress; settled out of court and created the truth and reconciliation act. However this means their voice isn"t heard in court. The act creates a voice for previous students who can explain the impact on them and their current life (ex family role).
