SOCI-102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Prediabetes, Medicalization, Tim Hortons
Document Summary
Frequently hear of obesity crisis:but what is the nature of this program. Fat is a term with social valuations: nothing inherently bad or insulting about the term or description; we choose to use fat as an insult. Fat also differs as a term of measurement: ex we may be fat by standards of the malnourishedperson. We implicate morality: see them as gluttonous, as ignoring eating norms, deem them unworthy because of a lack of personal control. Norms and values favour slimness; we see the average body weight as both normal and good. We base our ideal body on the white middle class ideal. And we regard the body in general as suspicious see our mind as above it; we see the body as the source of sin and temptation, the site of wrongdoing. We see the body as something to be tamed and controlled/ the body is our link to nature, which must be reined in and disciplined.
