SOCI-225 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Corporate Crime, Substantive Law
Document Summary
Criminal justice system in canada: our criminal justice system has developed as a response by the state to alleged and actual violations of the criminal law. It contains various agencies, processes, and practices focused upon those individuals who are charged for (or suspected of) breaking the law or who are victims of criminal activity. In recent years, the federal government has taken a "law and order" approach to criminal justice and as a result many practitioners debate the veracity of these changes. We expect the criminal justice system to search for truth and uphold justice by, for example, ensuring that the innocent are not wrongfully punished or that the outcomes of decisions are not inaccurate. Our laws, legislation, and practices have to achieve justice, ensure legal rights are upheld, and implement both fairness and equality. Some people answer this question by stating that it is an act that is in violation of the criminal law.
