Medical (rehabilitation) model, whose goal it is to rehabilitate those convicted of a criminal offence. The majority of the activities associated with this model are found at the latter stages of the system, after the individual has been convicted and is being assessed by those who work in the court system or in corrections. Probation officers assist judges by providing presentence reports, providing information to the judge about an offender"s needs. They may recommend release into the community with conditions, which may include attending appropriate treatment programs or involvement in a therapeutic court such as a problem solving court. Cost-effectiveness has increasingly become a major issue for the various agencies in the criminal justice system over the past few decades. According to king, these restrictions have led various agencies to create measures of bureaucratic efficiency, such as making sure that those charged with a criminal offence are tried within a reasonable period of time.
