BIOL 111: REPTILES
How to get away from water altogether?
-More efficient heart
-Amniotic egg
-Better excretory system (uric acid)
Truly terrestrial:
-Breathe via lungs only, must conserve water
-Skin is waterproofed by keratin
-Produce a special nitrogenous waste (uric acid)
-Reproduce & develop on land
-Internal fertilization
More advanced heart:
-Moves the blood around the water counter to gravity
-Divided ventricle, on their way to a 4-chambered heart, their blood is less mixed
-3 circuits – pumping to lungs, pumping to the body in both circuits and not to the
lungs, they use this when they are under water because there is no exchange of
oxygen in the water
-In both sides of the ventricle, they are pumping to the body
Crocodiles:
-Fully divided ventricle (4 chambers)
-Maintain the accessory pathway when under water
-Still not entirely divided blood, little bit of a mix
The Amniotic Egg = egg surrounded by extra-embryonic membranes
-External shell
-Leathery or brittle (CaCO3)
-Permeable to gases (02 & CO2)
-Fairy impermeable to water, retains it (Gore-tex)
-Not present in therian mammals

Document Summary
Breathe via lungs only, must conserve water. Produce a special nitrogenous waste (uric acid) Moves the blood around the water counter to gravity. Divided ventricle, on their way to a 4-chambered heart, their blood is less mixed. 3 circuits pumping to lungs, pumping to the body in both circuits and not to the lungs, they use this when they are under water because there is no exchange of oxygen in the water. In both sides of the ventricle, they are pumping to the body. Maintain the accessory pathway when under water. Still not entirely divided blood, little bit of a mix. The amniotic egg = egg surrounded by extra-embryonic membranes. Fairy impermeable to water, retains it (gore-tex) Draw picture of the egg from the slide*** The egg can get rid of oxygen but not nitrogenous waste. Internal ferilization; sperm can"t penetrate the egg shell. Shell & albumen re added to the fertilize egg in the female"s oviduct.
