BIOLOGY 110 LECTURE 14
ARTHROPODS
ECDYZOANS – that grow by moulting, sheds outer layer (cuticle or exoskeleton)
Protostomes: Priaulid worms: BC, marine worms
Nematomorphia – larvae in the worms are grown inside the host, when grown, the
larvae kills the host, found in swimming pools
Loricifera – small organisms, tiny marine sediment, attach firmly to substrates
Tardigrades (main phylum) – tiny organisms, 8 legs, similar to arthropods due to
segmented body, survive extreme weather conditions, aka “water bears” survive without
food for 30 days
Onychophora – velvet worms: tropical environment, closed relative to arthropods, like a
caterpillar, slim cannons,
Arthropods: most diverse phylum in the eukaryote group, composed of many taxon,
Diversity – Myriapodes: Scutigera (in your bed * please check when you get home)
Insects – dytiscus - diving bettle, predaceous, adults collect air under wings and use tis
to brethe underwater
Honey Bee – worker bees dance to communicate location of new food source
Arthropods: jointed foot:
Segmented externally and internally, CNS, jointed appendages with specialized
functions (jumping, feeding, etc.)
Rigid exoskeleton – ecdysozoan – moulting animal
-Once shed, the new one will take hours or even days in order to harden
Disadvantages: you will be vulnerable during the time that you shed and the time that it
hardens
-Inflexible and heavy
-Continuous growth in size is not possible
-Periodically shed
-Respiration through
-Requires a lot of energy in order to shed
Advantage; hard exterior coating to protect you from other animals (predators)
