Document Summary

Everything we have talked about so far is the product of evolution from a single ancestor. Mutation in a type of toad: a mutation changes the orientation of where the eyes grow. Allele: variation of a gene that can result in different observable phenotypic traits. Mutations are the ultimate source of all genetic variation. They change the genetic code, which generates new alleles (alternative forms of the same gene), which may change amino acid sequences or alter gene expression, which may have phenotypic effects. Ie: drosophila had mutations with phenotypic effects changes in thorax, eyes, wings, etc. Even if they are beneficial, these are unlikely to happen and they are of low effect. Genetic drift causes random changes in allele frequency results in random mortality (in small populations) Genetic drift is stronger in smaller populations: allele frequencies in computer simulations. -count how many of one type of allele and divide it by the number of total allele.
