Document Summary

Isotopes are versions of the same element with diferent masses (number of neutrons). The mass on the periodic table is the average of all isotopes (this is why masses oten have decimals). Everything in bio is based on carbon, as it 4 covalent bonds can be formed. Common funcional groups are hydroxyl, amino, and carboxyl. Humans are made of water, ions, large and small molecules. This is why as we get older we dry out" more. Bonds: covalent- strongest bond, occurs between two shared molecular electrons, hydrogen- occur between h, o, n, and f. these are the second strongest bonds (ied w. 3. ionic) and are very important in biology. Ionic- these refer to the ionic bonds in proteins, not solid crystals. This is why they are of equal strength to hydrogen bonds: hydrophobic- minimize the efects that are disrupive to the hydrogen bonding water network.
