Document Summary

Biol 200 - lecture 14, nuclear import and export. After matured, the mrna has to go out from the nucleus to the cytosol. At the same time, all the proteins that are used in the nucleus have to the transported inside the nucleus. Of course the size changes, but the structure is very conserve between east and vertebrates. Complex can select which proteins has to go in or out of the nucleus. Small molecules (<40kdaltons) can diffuse through the npc. Bigger molecules cannot, they need an import/export protein. There are many npc in the nuclear membrane, so diffusion happens normally. Notice, he npc is a whole in the nuclear membrane. Inside of the nucleus there is a basket. In the middle of the hole there is a nesh. The npc fuses the inner membrane and the outer membrane opening a hole in the nuclear double membrane. The key feature of the npc is the mesh in the middle.
