Concepts in critical postmodern cultural studies: history of thought + economic, social, and environmental context from the mid. 1970s to today: modernism: ever more progress (enlightenment), ever freer society, ever "truer" science, ever more material comfort ever newer art, postmodernism - maybe we shouldn"t have these grand narratives. Finding shells pierced 90,000 years ago in africa: euro-centric opinion - isn"t art. Presenting the shells in the way they are in the figure, it is a semiotic strategy to make people believe that they are in fact made by humans: the reality is we don"t know. Semiotic stratagem: visual/verbal trick that immediately conveys a meaning: a rhetorical advice reinforcing the narrative. If the argument is circular, the method is theory laden. i. e. the method is producing results that will support an assumption. Example: the brain isn"t a network, but the brain is made up of little centers that each do a specific thing.
