How do we go from undifferentiated cells that are pluripontent and make final cell types. S5 fate maps in dev biol is what"s gonna happen if you don"t do anything (don"t mess with the sys ie what happens during normal dev) . specification: first stage in process of acquisition of fate. Cell has taken on properties necessarily to turn into a cell type, but not differentiated yet. Will differentiate if take out of embryo and place in neutral env (ex remove cell of ectoderm of gastrula, put in dish with nothing around, they"ll start taking properties of neural tissue. These cells are already specified" = still reversible (the process has started and they"ve taken a step toward becoming a certain cell type, but not yet irreversible. 2) determination: not yet , but commited determined .
