Document Summary

Ex ovo amnia: the idea that everything comes from egg. Vegetative reproduction of worm (a segment that develop in to new head and tail) Fundamental tension between altruistic and selfish cell lineages. Selection on cells within individual that favors faster replication. Selection at individual level favors integrity (*selection at population level favors cooperation) Fundamental division of labour: somatic and germ cells. Germ line is vulnerable to selfish cell lineages. Slime mold congregate in starvation, selfish lines differentiate into spores (potentially immortal because they can be passed down generations) Germ line is separated early to protect against selfish lineages. Large organism are generally more complex, but also dependent on species type. Tumors are evolving population of cells within body. Selection favors population that can replicate fast, and make tumor makes more aggressive, but still evolutionary dead ends. Embryo gastrulation is am important innovation that distinguish the outside environment to inside of body & enables more complex body plans.
