BIOL 304 Lecture Notes - Lecture 34: Cleaner Fish, Helping Behavior, Hydrolysis
Document Summary
Non excludable goods/resources can be over exploited by selfish individuals. Especially selfish use of depletable resources--tragedy of the commons, unless its regulated by community. Hydrolyse sucrose outside cell, but only some individuals have the suc gene. If the density is high, there is more cheating behavior birds. Producer relies on individual learning, trial and error. Policing reciprocity: organisms cooperate in nature punishes cheating behavior. E. g. the client will chase off, or abandon a cheating cleaner fish. E. g. small bird cooperate with neighbors to chase off predators. In trade off matrix, the ess is always cheat if the game is played only once. The aggressive programs extinct quickly, more advantageous in competition, but also pose high damage to each other--eliminates aggressive strategies from the pool and cooperative strategies survive. Tit for tat: first cooperate, then copy the opponent"s previous move. E. g. stickle back fish experiment (with mirrors), only approach predator when have cooperative partner.
